A Turkish delight
Turkey has something of a reputation for being a fusion of East and West, but it's important to understand that it's a place that cannot just be summed up in a sentence. There is an utter delight in witnessing strong elements of both sides of the world, while being immersed in a place that very obviously belongs to neither.
Taking a gulet from Bodrum, you'll come into contact with many contrasting aspects of East and West as you proceed from Orak Island to Cati, Sedir Island, Karacasogut, Longoz and many other destinations besides. Such places are smaller than the hubs of Istanbul and its equivalents, and they offer an extraordinary range of experiences that are wonderfully otherworldly.
Going from the vibrant nightlife of Bodrum to the natural harbour of Longoz, pausing to experience snorkelling among the reefs and the history of port town Marmaris among other wonders, you will truly feel as though you have seen a different side to this fascinating country.
While there is always the option of relaxing in the stylish and comfortable surroundings of the gulet, we're confident the extraordinary landscapes surrounding you will be more than enough to tempt you onto the shore. A smaller vessel gives you an opportunity to do this much more often, with walking in the pine forest of woods around Cati and windsurfing near Yedi Adalar making for enormously enjoyable experiences.
No matter where you go, there is nowhere quite like Turkey, and you will find plenty of evidence of East meets West. However, it is perhaps its natural assets that make for such a compelling case when it comes to holidaying in such an exceptional place. From the moment you embark to the second you leave, you'll feel that Turkey will have touched your heart.

Cruising in the Indian Ocean
When it comes to cruising, you can't get much better than taking a small cruise ship to the Indian Ocean, which offers a number of truly legendary holiday destinations from the magnificent Maldives to the stunning Seychelles, where Prince William and Princess Kate enjoyed their honeymoon. But where to go? It's worth looking over your options below and deciding on what you want the focus to be. Here is our helpful guide to cruising the Indian Ocean.
Mauritius
A fascinating blend of cultures awaits you on Mauritius, with an extraordinary melting pot of religions and practices for such a small island. Located approximately 2,000 kilometres off the southeastern coast of Africa, you can be sure of warm weather during your stay. A paradise for deep-sea fishing, it is a haven for those who long for excellent cuisine and a more relaxed approach to life. Highlights include the picturesque coastal village of Grand Bay, the bustling Port Louis and the awe-inspiring beach of Tamarin. For the adventurous, there is also the opportunity to swim with dolphins in their own habitat. But all the more fascinating is the scenery. The island's beaches dramatically give way to enormous virgin forests that are calling out to be explored, and there will be plenty of opportunity for you to sit and enjoy the natural surroundings aboard one of the luxurious cruise vessels available. Add in the delights of Chinese, Indian, French and African
cuisine – plus the infectious beat of sega music and the irresistible party spirit the island is famous for – and you can understand why so many people call it 'paradise'.
Maldives
Once an essential trading hub of the Indian Ocean where all manner of traditions and cultures came into contact, the Maldives has a remarkably diverse selection of languages, beliefs, arts and attitudes thanks to its international routes. Rarely in the world can you see African drumming, Arabian construction techniques and fine artistry reminiscent of southeast Asian architecture all in one location. Exploring the natural beauty with a catamaran is the natural option – thanks to their shallower drafts, they are able to slip into coves and harbours that are inaccessible to their larger counterparts. Highlights of the Maldives cruises include the Omadhoo island and its delightful fishing village, as well as the Raiga Dhiggiri landmass which is inhabited only by two guards to put off unauthorised access. There are two itineraries available – a seven night option and a ten night.
The Seychelles
The beautiful unspoilt waters of the Seychelles are a stunning sight, and it's no wonder they attracted a certain royal couple for their honeymoon. Such is the appeal of this remarkable archipelago that Seafarer offers two distinct options for cruising – one in a mega yacht that carries up to 49 passengers and one in a sailing catamaran that boasts just 24 passengers. Both offer extraordinary journeys throughout this paradise at the hands of a highly knowledgeable crew who can help you unwrap the mysteries that surround it. There is plenty of overlap between the two sets of holidays, with both offering numerous opportunities to explore the unique culture that exists here, and to drink in the natural beauty that is prevalent across the many islands of the Seychelles. Particular highlights include Anse Lazio, which is commonly cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world; former leper colony Curieuse, which is now home to giant tortoises; and
the deserted island of La Digue. So close to the equator, you can count on good weather, although tropical storms are common. Luckily, while they are heavy in the volume of rain, they don't generally last long and are usually followed by bright sunshine.
No matter where you choose to go within the Indian Ocean, it's always worth taking a small cruise ship for the intimacy you get with the destination. If you have a large party, it may be worth hiring an entire yacht for the duration of your trip – perfect for a group exploration of the Indian Ocean.
Caribbean visitors soar in 2013
The glittering azure waters of the Caribbean proved as inviting as ever in 2013, with its tourism bureau reporting higher than ever visitor figures this week.
In a statement released yesterday (February 16th), the Caribbean Tourism Organisation announced that both the number of visitors to the region and their annual expenditure have risen to its highest levels in three years.
Money spent by tourists was up by 2.3 per cent on 2012’s figures to $28.1 billion, while actual visitor numbers rose to their highest levels in three years to 25 million.
Beverly Nicholson-Doty, chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, was quick to comment on the success.
“There wasn’t a single month during 2013 that any indicators fell below 2012 levels,” he claimed, adding that there had been significant progress in the industry that had allowed for the rise in arrivals.
Indeed, even the Caribbean’s own residents are showing signs of travelling within the region in order to explore what the islands have to offer – a sure sign that there are some incredible gems to be found here.
Travel between the islands was up 1.8 per cent, an encouraging sign despite the fact it is a slight decrease from 2012’s figures.
The report also highlighted a dramatic increase in the number of South Americans travelling to the region, although they are not the only ones able to enjoy this sunny paradise.
Intrepid travellers wishing to explore a different side to the Caribbean by seeing multiple islands should opt for a yacht cruise, something that can offer them an inside look at the cultures, people and natural beauty of this incredible region.
Travel via a Tall Ship Star Clipper or its larger Royal Clipper cousin for an even more majestic experience as you sail from island to island, witnessing the best beaches and coves of Barbados, St Lucia, Dominica and Antigua as you sail.
Must visit: The islands of Cabo Verde
Cape Verde's unusual mix of Portuguese and African history has made it an absolute favourite for holidaymakers all over the world. But, travelling aboard a Harmony V mega-yacht with luxury facilities including a swimming pool, comfortable lounge, deck lounge, bar and restaurant, and a maximum of 49 fellow passengers to share them with, you can be sure of getting a unique perspective on the archipelago.
On your journey, you'll be privileged enough to witness breathtaking vistas, characteristic towns, stunning seascapes and plenty more. Highlights include the island of Fogo, so often referred to as the Island of Fire thanks to its 3,000-metre volcano – Fogo Volcano. Go right to the crater's edge and look down at the landscape of lava bubbling away just below the Earth's crust.
From this magnificent sight to something altogether different – San Antao is the greenest of all Cape Verde's islands. A wild and untainted landscape awaits, with rocky crags, soaring mountains and sweeping valleys.
And those who have often stared into their morning coffee wondering sleepily where it has come from, will be pleased with the plantation tours on Tarrafal. These also represent an opportunity to learn about the challenges of farming and the distinct culture of Cape Verde, as you will be able to meet the local residents.
But it's not only adventure that awaits you here as there will be plenty of opportunity to relax on deck, enjoying the company of your fellow cruisers or the flat screen TV in your cabin below. Enjoy a swim in the pristine waters – warmed not only by the sun, but also by the boiling lava that is so evident in this particularly volcanic part of the world.
There's no denying that the islands of Cabo Verde are a treat to look at, as well as to experience firsthand. But witnessing them via a yacht is certainly the most convenient – and enjoyable – way to do so.
Turkey to request e-visa from tourists
Holidaymakers embarking on a cruise to Turkey this summer are being warned that they will soon be required to fill out an electronic visa before they arrive in order to enter the country, in accordance with the new Law on Foreigners.
As of April 11th, the current practice of obtaining visas upon arrival at a point of entry into the country will come to an end, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.
However, it will continue to operate the current system for what it terms a 'transitional period', (comma) encompassing the 2014 tourist season.
While the news has been met with criticism from some in the tourist industry, others have pointed out it will signal the end of long lines at immigration for cruise goers and airline passengers, especially as it only takes three minutes to obtain a visa online.
The new system will also eliminate the need for tourists to carry the exact money in English pounds to obtain a visa, as is common practice in many entry points. In addition, fees for documents arranged over the internet will be cheaper than those paid for on arrival.
Passengers who arrive at Turkish ports and airports without previously paying for their e-visas will be required to do so in an interactive kiosk before they can proceed past the border.
While paying for an e-visa over the internet is expected to be the quicker and cheaper method of getting into the country, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has warned travellers to be wary of counterfeit sites that may charge additional fees for the collection of the visas.
"Some unauthorised websites may charge for information about e-visas, and for submitting applications," the FCO said in a statement. "These websites are not endorsed by or associated with the Turkish government."
Those apprehensive about such websites can directly reach the appropriate webpage via this link: www.evisa.gov.tr
Maldives remains favourite for Brits
The Maldives has come out on top again as the favourite long-haul destination for Brits, beating the likes of Thailand, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates, to the number one spot in a recently released poll.
This is no surprise for the destination though, which has ranked first in the annual Travel Edit survey for a total of nine years now.
Chris Lorenzo, Managing Director of Seafarer, shed some light on why the Maldives have consistently proven to be so popular.
"Whilst the Maldives have always been noted for the fabulous choice of private and exclusive resorts, the concept of island hopping and sailing as a way of exploring this fascinating island group is increasing in popularity," he said.
"We find that people are increasingly looking for an element of adventure and activity in their holiday experience and sailing a spacious modern catamaran with a professional crew to look after you and do all the hard work whilst exploring this beautiful country ticks all the right boxes."
The Maldives has, in recent years, even attracted a royal couple on their honeymoon, with newlyweds Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton enjoying a delayed holiday on the island paradise in 2011.
Mauritius, which boasts many of the same plus points as the Maldives, also attained a top ten position at number six, just below the US.
However, if you're looking to experience the Maldives and Mauritius, it's worth considering that their beautifully rugged coastlines can be fully explored by taking a cruise itinerary, which offers a comprehensive, yet unique perspective on their respective cultures.
Forget taking a large overbearing cruise vessel and instead enjoy a luxury and personalised experience with Seafarer Cruises.
