 Sicily, Malta and the Aeolian Islands Cruise Itinerary

Day 1

Embarkation 3 pm. Welcome dinner. Overnight in port.

Day 2

Catania – This is our starting point for our 2 all day excursions to Taormina, the jewel city of Sicily or Old Catania and the Etna Volcano. Late in the evening sailing to Valetta/Malta. Overnight at sea.

Day 3

Valetta – Malta was home to a rich prehistoric culture that created megalithic structures that are among the world’s most impressive. The structures at the Tarxien and elsewhere on the island were built before Egypt’s Great Pyramids. Our morning and afternoon optional tours will allow you to these prehistoric sites as well the historic sites of Valletta, the island’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city. The walking tour in the afternoon will include a visit inside St. John’s Cathedral to see its stunning interior and art treasures. Overnight in port.

Day 4

Valetta – Morning sailing to GozoIsland.GozoIsland – Swim stop in the morning at one of the Gozo’s beautiful beaches. Arrival in GozoHarbour after lunch. Optional excursion with visits of the Citadel and its Baroque Cathedral, our Lady of Ta Pinu Basilica, the St George Basilica and the CathedralMuseum. After a short wine tasting late in the afternoon we return to the ship. Late night departure for Syracuse/Sicily. Overnight at sea.

Day 5

Syracuse – Early morning arrival in the port of Syracuse. Syracuse, one of the most and prestigious cities of the Hellenistic World, was a rival of Athens. Our morning optional excursion will bring us to the spectacular 15,000-seat Greek theatre, the elliptical Roman amphitheatre, the ArchaeologicalMuseum, the Temple of Apollo, the Fountain of Aretusa, and the Cathedral, which incorporates the remains of the famed Temple of Athena. After lunch you can take our afternoon excursion taking you inland, into Sicily’s southeast region, known for its Baroque towns. You will visit exquisitely-preserved Noto, a jewel of a town situated on a plateau. Late in the evening we leave Syracuse for the Aeolian Islands. Overnight at sea.

Day 6

Lipari – Morning arrival in Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands which sits on red volcanic rock and looks like ”a wall of bronze” according to the Greek poet Homer. Archaeological remains found here have yielded clues to civilizations which date to 1700 BC, including the Neolithic stones that sit alongside ancient tombstones, and ruins of Greek walls and Roman villas. The Spaniards found their way here in the 16th century, building the Castello (castle) and the 17 century cathedral that is perched above the harbour; All these sights will be available to see them on your morning optional sightseeing excursion. Afternoon at leisure. Overnight in Lipari.

Day 7

Lipari Vulcanic Island – We leave Lipari in the morning to reach VulcanoIsland famous for its majestic volcano crater and the mud baths. Later in the afternoon we sail to Panarea.Panarea Stromboli Island – Late in the afternoon, we reach Panarea, a quaint old style AeolianIsland. After time at leisure in port, we gather for our traditional farewell dinner at anchor. Later in the evening we start our return trip to Catania  and sail slowly past the island of Stromboli famous for its live volcano.  The sight of live lava eruptions is not to be missed. Overnight at sea.

Day 8

Arrival 08.30. Disembarkation 9 to 10 am
