The Greek Islands: A Who's Who
A plethora of islands both beguiling and extensive, the Greek islands is an eclectic family that has something for everyone. Numbering more than 6,000 if we're counting every islet and stone poking out from beneath the sea, only 78 of them have more than 100 inhabitants.
However, that's more than enough to be getting on with. Here is Seafarer's Who's Who guide to some of the most prominent family members.
The Cyclades
'Fun' is undoubtedly the name of the game for the Cyclades islands. It wasn't going to be anything else for this particular branch of the family tree, which happens to contain nightlife capital of the Mediterranean: Mykonos. If that's not enough, Mykonos's younger brother Syros is always trying to upstage his sibling with a boisterous scene that sees the parties going on until dawn.
But while the Cyclades islands can strike some as a little wild, there is also plenty to do here for history buffs. The island of Delos near the centre of the archipelago contains one of the most important mythological and historical sites in the world, being the supposed birthplace of Artemis and Apollo from the Greek mythology.
Other must-visit landmasses include Kythnos and its gorgeous Kolones bay, and the similarly tranquil Paros. Santorini is also worth mentioning, being one of the most famous islands for its rather volcanic past.
The Ionian Islands
The Ionians are a cheerful bunch that you will find welcoming and warm in their approach to life. Take the fair Kefalonia with her sophisticated settlements and Venetian architecture. Get on her right side and she'll let you see her endangered loggerhead turtle population.
Or how about stunning Lefkada, famed home to some of the best water sports conditions in the entire world? Explore the alleyways of her gorgeous capital and sit at the marina outside Zeus Bar, watching the windsurfers do their thing on the horizon.
You also won't want to miss out on the chance to explore Corfu, which many argue to be one of the most multi-faceted and interesting Greek islands in the family. So it's lucky Seafarer's Ionian tour allows for three days of getting to know her fabulous castle, intimate villages and extraordinary beaches. Make yourself at home on Corfu – she won't mind.
The Dodecanese Islands
If you're looking for a group of islands that allow for a more exclusive and intimate experience, look no further than the Dodecanese. Suave, sophisticated and stately, this is a cruise for those who love their history and want to indulge in a relaxing holiday off the beaten path. Adventurers, nature enthusiasts and beach lovers will all adore it here.
The first island we feel compelled to mention is Tilos. It's certainly off the beaten track, and while its status as an internationally protected bird sanctuary is enough to draw a few birdwatchers, the atmosphere is wonderfully quiet and intensely private.
Of the Dodecanese, perhaps Kos and Rhodes are the best known. The former is, of course, mentioned in Homer's Iliad, but it has also been visited by Hercules and has plenty of wonderful history to dig around in. While Rhodes is equally well-respected as being a World Heritage Site, full of incredible natural beauty including soaring mountains, stunning forests and wide sweeping planes. Its coastline is fantastic and you won't find a nicer selection of beaches anywhere in Greece.
Must-see treasures in Egypt
Egypt is celebrating The Return of the Tourist. No, we're not talking about the anticipated Star Wars film (That's got the equally cheesy title of 'The Force Awakens'), but instead the news that people are once more flooding to the country to discover its incredible cultural heritage.
To celebrate, we're showcasing some of the Nile's most wonderful treasures – the list of absolute must-see sights that you simply won't want to miss on a journey to the land of the Pharaohs and pyramids. They're all included on our spectacular 10 Night Nile Grand Tour, a cruising experience that will stay with you until the rest of your life.
Cairo
The tourist numbers that we're all excited about specifically concern Cairo, so it feels only natural that we should start with this incredible multi layered city. With its twisting passages and various monuments, fascinating museums and dozens of street markets, you will be hard-pushed to find a more intricate city anywhere. On your day of leisure exploring the metropolis, you might want to do a variety of things, including visit the Egyptian Museum, the Citadel of Salah ad-Din or the surprisingly green and verdant Al-Azhar Park. Further – just on the edge of the city, you'll find some of the must-see Egyptian wonders. Step forward, the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. One thing is certain – you won't find it difficult to fill your time here.
Luxor
It should be compulsory to visit Luxor if you're in Egypt. And indeed, many people do venture to this incredible collection of incredible buildings that includes various monuments, temples and tombs. The most notable of these are the Luxor Temple and Karnak, arguably the most spectacular structures in Egypt. Also awe inspiring are the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, the Royal tombs located on the opposite bank. There's a lot to explore, and the best way to do it in comfort and style is on a Nile cruise.
Lake Nasser
Egypt is a nation of wonders that are both modern and ancient. Lake Nasser is one of the former types of creation. This extraordinary man made reservoir is more than 500 kilometres long and 35 kilometres wide, and plays host to the Aswan High Dam complex. A visit here includes a visit to the famed Abu Simbel temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which were relocated in their entirety in 1968 to make way for the lake. Not, of course, that you would know it just by looking. The Nubian statues here include colossal structures featuring Ramesses II, Ra-Harakhty, Ptah and Amun. Much of it is open to the public.
Kom Ombo
The agricultural town of Kom Ombo was originally called Nubt, which means 'City of Gold'. And what a heritage the ancients bequeathed to it! The local temple – the Temple of Kom Ombo – is an unusual double temple constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty. Wandering around, you'll find it is dedicated to two gods rather than one, hence the term 'double temple'. One half worships the falcon god Horus, who was worshipped as one of the most significant deities. And the other is concerned with the crocodile god Sobek, who was responsible for fertility. Visiting this temple is therefore a unique and fascinating experience unlike any other.
Six reasons to sail the Caribbean
The Caribbean. A sultry seductive destination with as many stunningly beautiful beaches as there are stars in the sky. This archipelago is well known for being an extraordinary holiday destination with a variety of fantastic places that are well worth sampling.
But wait – if you're midway through booking a single-destination holiday to this vibrant location, we've got a list of reasons that may well change your mind. And as Captain Jack Sparrow knows, there's only one way to see the Caribbean, and that's by boat.
Reason 1 – We're talking about an archipelago here…
The first reason that sailing the Caribbean makes sense is a simple one – it's an archipelago. The only way you're going to get more than a snapshot of it is by visiting more than one place. Sure, you can easily spend a week admiring the beaches and rainforests of Dominica, or you could spend ten days in Havana exploring the history and culture of Cuba.
But these holidays represent many missed opportunities. The Caribbean is unbelievably multifaceted and exciting, and staying in one place severely limits what you can see. So, you know, you could opt for that two-week trip to a beach in the Bahamas. But you're unlikely to get as much as an unforgettable experience as if you were sailing from one paradise-portion to the next, taking plenty of time to experience the local culture and relax in glittering coves and coral reefs.
Reason 2 – It's more convenient than packing and repacking your belongings all the time
All right, we've made a case for seeing more of this glittering jewel than just the one side. But why consider sailing? Well, you could in theory drive around getting ferries to various islands, but with an island nation, that's going to be a lot of hassle. Come on, this is supposed to be a holiday! Travelling from one hotel to the next becomes incredibly repetitive and exhausting, and you're meant to be enjoying yourself.
Comparatively, imagine resting up on deck, swigging a cocktail while the captain and the crew take care of the sailing? This has got to be the better option, surely? Additionally, bringing your accommodation everywhere you go has its own advantages. You only need to pack and unpack your clothes once, and you've got time to make it your own.
Reason 3 – There's an air of exclusivity with Seafarer
While sailing with Seafarer, you'll be able to make the most of our experienced crew's intricate knowledge of this incredible archipelago. There are plenty of special places that few other eyes have seen, which we can lead you to. Lots of locations that present some unique but rarely seen attributes of the Caribbean feature on our extensive tours.
Take, for example, the stunning shores of Nevis, which look as though they've been plucked straight from a Michael Palin travel documentary. Completely unspoilt, simultaneously charismatic with cragginess and beset with beaches. Or you might learn about the best places to visit in Falmouth Harbour on Antigua, with its myriad of dockyards, marinas and old inns resembling the famed town of Tortuga in Pirates of the Caribbean. Stroll between sun-tanned yacht crews and sea hardy fishermen in search of trinkets and see if you can discover some treasure for yourself.
Reason 4 – Sailing the Caribbean gives you the chance to try something different
Naturally, if you're travelling to the Caribbean, you want plenty of opportunities to relax. And you will have them on a Seafarer holiday, with chances to chill out and enjoy the lush surroundings of various beaches and spectacular coves. But for some travellers, the pull of adventure and adrenaline is simply too strong to keep them lying down for long.
If this is you, don't imagine for one minute that you have to be cooped up on deck when you could be testing your limits at something new. A holiday with us might see you windsurfing across a beautiful azure bay. Or explore the intimate crags of coral that characterise much of the coastline with a diving experience. Failing that, check out the vast numbers of tropical fish that call the Caribbean their home. Watch them flick through your fingers, as entranced by you as you are by them.
Reason 5 – You're getting away from it all
We're all familiar with recent reports that we're using our smartphones on holiday more often than ever before. However, surrounded by the beauty of the Caribbean, you'll want to leave the device turned off and in your cabin. Sailing increases the feeling of isolation and otherworldliness, helping you to imagine that you've truly left the drudgery of the nine-to-five behind you for good.
Of course, you haven't. But it's nice to pretend for a while, isn't it?
Reason 6 – Sailing the Caribbean is pure unadulterated fun
What other reason do you really need to explore this extraordinary island nation by boat? Whether you choose to board the spectacular Star Clipper with its full collection of modern comforts and for the full sailing experience with a fully rigged traditional tall ship, or hop aboard a catamaran for an altogether more intimate experience, we can guarantee you will adore every second of your time in this wondrous place.

Greece appeals to LGBT travellers
Greece, and Athens in particular, have been named preferred destinations for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender holidaymakers, who said that they feel completely comfortable travelling the nation with their spouse or partner.
This is according to research released earlier this week (November 5th) by the leading global travel networking association Out Now Business Class (ONBC) at the World Travel Market in London.
The ranking placed Greece ninth on a list of the top ten leading country destinations, and Athens ninth on a list of the top ten European city destinations for 2015.
America, France and Australia topped the list, while Amsterdam, London and Paris were the preferred cities.
Chief executive of Out Now Global, Ian Johnson, commended all countries and cities that had been named as part of the survey.
"The number one motivating factor for consumers is needing to know before they go that they can relax and be comfortable being themselves on holidays," he said.
"Nobody wants to worry that the staff that serve them in a location might be uncomfortable with their sexual orientation or gender identity. People would prefer to stay elsewhere."
According to the World Tourism Organization, the LGBT consumer takes an average four trips a year, the majority in the mid-range, immediately followed by luxury class.
The research highlighted the fact that LGBT tourism has bloomed into an increasingly competitive international market, estimated at more than $200 billion in annual spending.
Seafarer welcomes holidaymakers from all walks of life, and invites everyone to come and explore the rugged coastline of the Greek Islands on one of our fascinating and relaxing cruises.

Cuba is set for the high season. Are you?
Few destinations are as beguiling, as enigmatic and as downright gorgeous as Cuba. Boasting more than its fair share of secluded coves and attractive beaches, this island paradise is a joy to experience. And since it's just getting ready for its peak tourist season, we thought it was time we introduced you to this spectacular part of the world.
Aboard one of our superb vessels, you will be privileged enough to witness landscapes that look as though they belong in fairy tales. The secluded coves, for example, encroached as they are with woodland and bordering on smooth sandy beaches, could be the ones in Neverland in JM Barrie's Peter Pan. Perhaps there are Lost Boys hiding on the shores? Our crews know Cuba intimately and if you want to glean a little knowledge about the island, they are the people to ask. But first, you actually need to book yourself onto one of our cruises. Take a look below at the available options.
Seven Nights Tall Ship
Cuba is in the Caribbean, and what better way to explore the island than on a vessel that Captain Jack Sparrow would be proud of? Admittedly, we can't promise bottomless barrels of rum, but the experience of sailing on our splendid Star Flyer with its four masts, 21 sails and pair of pools is utterly unbeatable. You have all the facilities you could ever need, including a stunning sundeck with three swimming pools, a stylish piano bar and full air conditioning.
This is impressive, but is as yet nothing compared to the itinerary itself. The journey starts in Cienfuegos – a regular Tortuga-like settlement full of charming neo-classical homes and elegant public buildings that line the Prado. From here, you sail to Cayo Blanco, which advertises everything a beach lover could possibly want. Everlasting white sands, clear blue skies and lush vegetation. Once you've finished lazing around, it's time to get cultural with a trip to the sugar mills in Trinidad. Walk between the 17th and 18th centuries, exploring time as well as space. The town itself is also gorgeous, paved with cobblestones and boasting incredible buildings.
Your trip will take you through the Caymen Islands – an archipelago that stretches for 100 miles with more than 350 islands of all shapes and sizes. You won't want to stop exploring and you'll be sorry to return to Cienfuegos for a last spot of gift shopping before the journey home.
Cuba Dream
The Cuba Dream experience takes place aboard one of our comfortable catamarans, which are perfect vessels for those keen to focus more on the destination itself. If you know you spend a lot of time exploring the holiday location, then this is most definitely for you. There are two actual catamarans available for your trip – the Dream 60 and the Poncin 82.
Exploring the Cuba Dream itinerary is a wildlife extravaganza. Setting sail from Cienfuegos and experiencing Cayo Rico, Cayo Largo, Cayo Estopa and other gorgeous island locations, you will adore sailing from one stunning cove to the next, with plenty of opportunity to check out local creatures. Snorkeling in Reef Ballanetos is a particularly invigorating experience, with all manner of tropical fish to witness as you plunge towards the depths. Other creatures you might meet on your journey include sea turtles and iguanas, making this a really menagerie of a trip.
Sights and Sounds of Cuba
The title of this cruise is reflective of the aim – to show you more of what Cuba's all about. To introduce you to its rich cultural diversity and allow you a glimpse into its incredible history. Aboard the Sailing Cruiser Panorama, you will have access to a spacious sun deck and sun loungers, as well as a private yacht-style ambiance aboard a large enough vessel capable of giving you complete comfort. Take to the sea with kayaks, snorkeling and windsurfing equipment. For although this is a cultural trip, there will still be plenty of time to relax and do your own thing – just as there should be on holiday.
Between the two destinations Havana and Cienfuegos, you'll have the opportunity to stop off at some truly inspiring places. Cabo San Antonio, for example, is renowned for having an extensive nature park that contains all sorts of animals not easily found outside of Cuba. Then there is Trinidad – a UNESCO World Heritage site that contains palaces and plazas amid its gorgeous cobblestone streets. You can explore the history of sugar farming with a visit to the Sugarmills Valley, also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Jetting from island to island, you will also have the opportunity to learn about what daily life is like in rural Cuba – a place far removed from our own culture.
No matter which trip to Cuba you choose to take, there is a truly unique sense around this special place. You're in for the time of your life and the best way to experience all its facets is on a Seafarer journey. Pick whichever one sounds best to you and come with us.
Frolic in the water with Seafarer
There’s nothing like getting your swimming trunks on and taking that first plunge into the sea on holiday. That feeling of being surrounded by unending turquoise water for miles around, coupled with the knowledge that your worries are truly over for the duration of your holiday is like a heavy burden being lifted from your shoulders. Here at Seafarer, we can really help you make the most of the watery paradise situated in your chosen location. We know the best spots for all the snorkelling and diving, and we are sure to enjoy regular stops in picturesque coves on attractive stretches of coastline, allowing you to explore for yourself. Take a look below at our favourite destinations for water exploration.
The Maldives
Swimming in the Maldives is truly a heavenly sensation. Crystal clear waters stretch as far as the eye can see, while gorgeous tropical fish follow your every move. Patterned in all the colours of the rainbow, they truly are a splendid sight, and our crew can take you to the best spots for seeing marine life. On top of the fish, keep an eye out for bottlenose dolphins which also call this island paradise ‘home’ at certain times of the year. For those who want to take to the sea in an alternate mode of transport, the Eleuthera catamaran offers a pair of sea kayaks, while the Marquise 56′ Catamaran offers one sea kayak. These seat two people and are great for frolicking around on the water.
The Seychelles
Some of the most incredible marine life in the world exists in the Seychelles. Temperatures are warm all year round here, making it an island paradise for all manner of creatures that can be found basking in the waves. We really can’t go any further without mentioning the unforgettable snorkeling, with thousands of fish to be found in the picturesque harbour of La Digue. Once again, there are plenty of coral reefs to be discovered, with both snorkelers and divers alike finding what they’re looking for. And once again, there is the option to try out the sea kayak aboard the Marquise 56′ Catamaran. Consider also the Garden of Eden cruise, where you can take advantage of sports and snorkelling equipment and a swimming platform.
The Bahamas
Another idyllic destination of palm trees, white sands and attractive wooden huts. But the Bahamas looks just as good underneath the water as it does on top, with snorkeling and diving proving some of the more popular activities here. Perfect white sand flows between your toes as you head out in search of incredible fish specimens, majestic turtles and more. Divers will see the most, of course, with the opportunity to spy Caribbean lobster, gardens of sea fans and even Atlantic spotted and bottlenose dolphins. This represents an experience that you’ll never forget.
Croatia
The Dalmatian Sea is as beautiful and appealing as you could ever hope for, with its deep blue hue and the charismatic cities of Croatia dotted along it. Between exploring the stunning constructs of Dubrovnik and Split, there is ample opportunity to take to the waves with some of the sporting equipment on one of our cruise vessels. Whether you choose to take to the waves in a kayak or on a windsurfer, you can be sure of having a great time. Wind speeds are very favourable here for the sailors and there is no limit to the fun you can have paddling around. Then, once you’re suitably exhausted, we’ll enjoy some fine Croatian cuisine to bring your strength back up. Bliss.
